The hearts of many were hardened and many withdrew themselves... this was a great trial to those that did stand fast in the faith; nevertheless, they were steadfast and immovable... they did impart of their substance... they did not wear costly apparel, yet they were neat and comely. The church began to be rich yet, they did not send away the naked and hungry, they did not set their hearts upon riches, they were liberal to all, no respect to persons.

the people of the church began to wax proud because of their riches which they had obtained by their industry. Great contentions among the people of the church even to exceed the pride of those who did not belong to the church of God. ...the church began to fail in its progress... great inequality among the people, some lifted up in pride, others abasing themselves.
Alma goes to call them to repentence throught the bearing down in pure testimony against them. |

Alma preaches to the members of the church: Preaches unto them a mighty change of heart... Rebukes them for their treatment of the poor... he knows of himself through fasting and prayer by the Holy Spirit that his teachings are true.
