Linotype
|
Cast type in continuous lines called slugs. The machine has three parts: the composing machine (matrices assembled in lines by means of a keyboard), the casting mechanism (lines are justified and cast as slugs), and the distributing mechanism (returns the matrices to the matrix magazine).

Monotype
|
Two units: one for keyboarding and one for casting.

Offset lithography or offset printing
|
Uses a planographic method of printing. The image is first printed indirectly, i.e. "offset", onto a rubber cylinder ("blanket") and the image is printed (transferred) off the blanket. The most common printing process used today.

Phototypesetting or photocomposition or filmsetting
|
type setting produced on photographic paper or film. Also now refers to computer typesetting on a laser imagesetter.

Digital typesetting

Letterforms created from digitized data (i.e., electronically processed, stored, and reproduced), which were generalized on a cathode ray tube (CRT) and then photographed onto film or paper.

a high resolution printer used to create copy for printing either on photographic paper or as film negatives or positives.

|
Relief plates made of plastic materials to which the image has been created by photomechanical means.

Xerography
|
"dry writing". Electrostatic process for copying an original without ink, pressure, or rollers. Commercial development by Xerox.
