Nasal bones |
Paired bones forming the anteriormost roof of the nasal cavities. |
In some mammals these bones are absent or are very small and do not roof the nasal passages |
|
Premaxillae (premaxillary bones) |
A pair of bones forming the lower margin of the outer nasal openings and anteriormost portion of the roof of the mouth, or palate. |
In most mammals each premaxilla has a elongate process extending along one side of the nasal cavity and a second process meeting the other premaxilla at the midline of the palate. |
|
Maxillae (maxillary bones) |
These two tooth-bearung bones make up a large part of the sides of the rostrum and the palate posterior to and adjoining the premaxillae. |
They are especially large and elongate in cetaceans. The anterior base of each zygomatic arch usually consists of an extension of the maxilla. |
