Metalloids(Semi-metals)
elements that have physical and chemical properties of metals and non-metals. these elements are on the border between metals and non-metals.
Semi-conductors
elements that are normally not conductors but when combined with a trace amount of other elements they will conduct. they will also conduct electricity at high temperatures. e.g. silicon carbide, silicon and germanium
Ionic Composition
Ions are held together by strong ionic bonds
Composition - Convalent Compounds
Molecules with strong convalent bonds between atoms, but weak forces between molecules
State at room temperature - Ionic
Crystalline Solids together in a 3-dimensional lattice
State at room temperature - convalent
Most are liquids or gases owing to weak forces between molecules. few are low-melting point solids
melting and boiling points - ionic
high - strong ionic bonds require a lot of energy to break
melting and boiling points - convalent
low - weak intermolecular forces require little energy to break
Solubility - Ionic
Most are soluble in water but are insoluble in organic(convalent) solvents
Solubility - Convalent
Mostare soluble in organic solvents, e.g ethanol, but insoluble in water
Electrical Conductivity - Ionic
Conduct electricty when molten or dissolved in water, because ions are free to move, in the solid state they are in a crystal lattice and cannot carry the currents
Electrical Conductivity - Convalent
Do not conduct electricity in any state because no free ions or electrons are present to carry the current
