Define a boiler? |
A boiler is a container for heating liquids or a tank for storing hot water to buildings |
|
Low temperature hot water boilers (criteria) |
• maximum 120°C (250°F) • maximum 1100 kPa (160 psig), except conventional cast iron boilers, which have a maximum of 207 kPa (30 psig) • usually rated in BTU/hr or EDR, • usually net rated and • comply with A.S.M.E section section IV |
|
High temperature hot water boilers ( criteria ) |
•over 120°C (250°F) •usually rated in MBH or BHP •usually gross rated and • comply with A.S.M.E. section 1 |
|
NOTE THE FOLLOWING!!!!!! |
•1 BHP= the ability of a boiler to evaporate 34.5 lbs of water per hour. • 34.5 lb/hr X 970 BTU/hr water = 33 475 BTU/hr = 1 BHP • 1 hot water EDR = 150 BTU/hr @ 71°C (160°F) |
|
CONVERSION of EDR to BTU |
Water: BTU=EDR X 150 BTU/hr Steam: BTU=EDR X 240 BTU/hr |
|
Conversion of BTU to EDR |
Water: EDR= BTU ÷ 150 BTU/hr Steam: EDR= BTU ÷ 240 BTU/hr |
|
GROSS OUTPUT |
The gross output represents the total heat output if the boiler, available as steam or hot water.
% Efficiency= gross output in BTUH÷ input in BTU × 100 |
|
cast iron boilers |
A boiler in which the heat exchanger is constructed of cast iron. These boilers usually contain a larger volume of water than other types of boilers. Some cast iron boilers may be used In both steam and hot water applications and assembled in sections due to their weight. High mass boiler |
