Summarise the Shantytown kid
Tells about his childhood in the bad parts of town where the Maghreb kids live. He is the smart kid at school. He is offered a job that his mom wants him to take, but his father tells him to stay in school. When he meets some Jewish kids he is embarrassed of being Arab. He feels the pressure to decide between being French and being Arab. A teacher showed him that he can be both. Asks if we are really that different, we all live, breathe, and are hurt, but are fundamentally the same. Faced with negatives of his arab classmates, and the racism of some of his French peers.
Summarize Femmes d'Algiers
Even though Algeria has been liberated, the women are still persecuted by the new regime because they are not men. She wrote it in French because she sees Arabic as a language of men who have imposed Islamic rules on women. No Exit is one of the stories where a neighbor boy dies and the 25 year old girl next door serves her father supper. Some people come over to see her with an offer of marriage. Her mother said that an honorable woman doesn’t live outside her home. Talks about the blood on Algerian sand that has been poured out for it’s freedom. Sister tells her to stop thinking so much. She doesn’t want to get married because she says she sees the future completely black before her eyes. But she gets set up anyway. “There is no exile for a man of God, there are only trials.” The true exiles are the ones who keep bumping into the walls of the past.
