4 basic principles of body mechanics
1. Alignment & Posture
2. Joint Mobility 3. Balance 4. Coordinated Movement |
EQUILIBRIUM
Sense of Balance
PROPRIOCEPTION
Ones own awareness of posture, movement, and changes in equilibrium and knowledge of:
position, weight and resistance of objects in relation to the body |
FOWLER'S POSITION
Semisitting Position, head and trunk are raised 45-90 degrees
LOW or SEMI FOWLERS POSITION
head and trunk raised 15-45 degrees
HIGH FOWLERS POSITION
Head and trunk raised 90 degrees, knees may or may not be flexed
FOWLERS POSITION & PPL THAT HAVE DIF. BREATHING
Fowlers is the position of choice for people who have difficulty breathing and ppl w/ heart problems
*In Fowlers pos. Gravity pulls diaphragm downward, allowing greater chest expansion & lung ventilation |
ORTHOPNEIC POSITION
p.t. sits in bed or at side of bed with side table across lap
* this position fascilitates resperation by allowing max chest expansion, esp for clients w/ dif. exhaling b/c push on bedtable |
DORSAL RECUMBENT /SUPINE POSITION
Back-Lying, head of bed flat
PRONE POSITION
Client lies on Abdomen with head turned to one side, only for short periods, only ppl w/ no vid. of spinal abnormalities
LATERAL POSITION
Person lies on one side of body, pillow between legs, good for ppl w/ sensory or motor deficits on one side of body-find lying on other side if comfortable
SIMS POSITION
Semiprone position, assumes position halfway between lateral and prone positions. The lower arm is positioned behind the client, upper in front, both legs in front upper more acutely flexed at hip/knee than lower...pregnant, unconscious d/t drainage and prevention of aspiration of fluids, enemas
