Describe use of force policy and its guiding principals
only that force reasonably necessary under the circumstances may be used, excessive force may never be used.
Force shall not be used if duties can be accomplished without it.
Force is limited to the minimum necessary. Minimum injury to persons and property.
Level 1
officer presence- Appearance, demeanor, and verbal and non-verbal communication that creates an atmosphere of compliance
Level 2
Verbal commands- verbal commands in the form of task direction eith consequence aimed at the subject
Level 3
control techniques- are techniques or actions with a low probability of causing connective tissue damage, lacerations of the skin, or broken bones.
ex-escort, transport wrist lock, pressure points
Level 4
aggresive responce techniques- techniques or actions with a probability of causing connective tissue damage, lecerations to the skin, or broken bones or that will prduce irritation to the skin, eyes, and/or mucous membranes.
ex- kicks and punches, stunning techniques, take downs, OC
Level 5
Intermediate weapon/ less than lethal- techniques or actions with a high probability of causing connective tissue damage, lacerations to the skin, or broken bones.
ex- baton, less than lethal 12 gauge sting balls
Level 6
Deadly force- any force that is likely to cause death or serious physical injury.
4 types of subjects
Passive compliant- a subject who follows an officers request or verbal directions
Passive Resistor- A subject who DOES NOT follow the officers requests or verbal task, direction, but offers no physical resistance tot he officers attempts to gain control.
Active resistor- a subject, who does not follow officers request or verbal task direction, offers physical resistance that prevents or may preventthe officer from gaining control, but does not attempt to harm officer.
active aggressor- a subject who attempts to harm or attack the officer
