token economy
A token economy is used on BM to increase desirable behavior and decrease undesirable behavior with the use of tokens.
token system
Individuals receive tokens immediately after displaying desirable behavior. The tokens are collected and later exchanged for a meaningful object or privilege
Why token are call the economy?
because their value will change depends on what the person has to do to get it.
What effects the value of the token economy?
how the person values it, what the person can purchase as a back up reinforcers and what the person will do to get it.
6 initial steps in setting up a token economy.
deciding on the target beh, taking a baseline, selecting backup reinforcers, selecting what tokens to use, who is going to help and choosing a location
Advantages of token economy:
-can be use with a group of people
-They are generalized reinforcers- because they can be trade for whatever they one. They generalized reinforcers has different values to people because people they all don’t want to do the same thing. Tokens can be trade the reinforcers that they can be trade are called back up reinforcers (they back up the reinforcers)
-Token can be giving immedialtley after a desirable behavior occurs and cashed in a later time for a back up reinforcers.
-tokens can be used for several needs and therefore saturation is improbable
-there is no delay giving tokens after the desired behavior has been shown
List at least five settings in which token economies have been used:
psychiatric wards hospitals , correctional facilities, classroom with kids with special needs. classroom settings student
Specific implementation procedures on the token economy;
Keeping a data
2- a reinforcing agent- is the person that gives the reinforcement and for what behaviors 3-Number of tokens to pay make tokens available for the active ind and non active
4-managing the backup reinforcers- make sure the reinforcer are going to be available for purchase and how many times the store will be open
5-Possible punishment contingencies- the use of tokens provides the possibility of using fines as punisgment for innapropiate behaviors. When fines are use we need to add training contingencies to teach the client how to accept fines in non aggressive manner.
6- supervision of staff-
7- handling potential problems
We don’t use punishment we use the response cause if you do this you get tokens if you don’t you don’t get it
Conditioned reinforcers (secondary reinforcers)
are stimuli that become reinforcers in this way are called because conditioning is needed to establish such stimuli as reinforcers.
The primary goal of a token economy is
to increase desirable behavior and decrease undesirable behavior.
Back-up reinforcers:
Back-up reinforcers are the meaningful objects, privileges, or activities that individuals receive in
exchange for their tokens.
Examples
of tokens
include food items, toys, extra free time, or outings.
The success of a token economy depends
on the appeal of the back-up reinforcers.
A system for recording data: Before what type (baseline data) should be rcorded
bout each individual's current behavior. Changes in behavior are then recorded on daily data sheets. This information is used to measure individual progress, as well as the effectiveness of the token economy. Information regarding the exchange of tokens also needs to be recorded.
Why tokens are called conditioned reinforcers?
because the reinforcers occurs when behavior is strengthened by events that have an effect because of a conditioning history.
