What is the CPR sequence for chain of survival?
CAB
Chest compressions
Airway
Breathing
What is the chest compression depth for an adult?
at least 2 in (5cm) (p4 AHA, BLS)
What is the depth of chest compressions in children and infants?
Children: 2 inches
Infants: 1 1/2 inches
**at least one third of the anterior-posterior diameter of the chest
When checking the pulse, what is the length of time?
Check the victim's pulse ( take at least 5 but no more than 10 seconds) p8 AHA, BLS
What is the ratio of compressions/breaths for an adult?
If you do not definitely feel a pulse within 10 seconds, perform 5 cycles of compressions and breaths (30:2), starting with compressions CAB
p 8 AHA, BLS
What are agonal gasps?
Are not normal breathing, Agonal gasps may be present in the first minutes after sudden cardiac arrest.
A person who gasps usually looks like he is drawing air in very quickly. The mouth may be open and the jaw, head, or neck may move with gasps. The gasps may sound like a snort, snore, or groan. Gasping is not normal breathing. It is a sign of cardiac arrest.
YOU Must activate the emergency response system, check for a pulse and start CPR
p8 AHA, BLS
Where do you place the defibrillator pads?
Attach to the victims bare chest
*Place one AED pad on the victims upper-right chest, below the collarbone
*Place the other pad to the side of the left nipple, with the top edge of the pad a few inches below the armpit.
Can you use an AED on a victim with implanted defib and/or pacemaker?
Yes.
Do not place the pad over the device, it may block the delivery of the shock to the heart.
p22 AHA, BLS
CPR on children: How many compressions/breaths for a lone rescuer?
30:2, all ages except newborn infants.
p29, AHA, BLS
CPR on children: How many compressions/breaths for 2 person rescuer?
15:2
p29, AHA, BLS
What is the compression depth for children?
At least 1/3 the depth of the chest, approx 2 inch
If you didn't witness the arrest, what do you do?
If you didn't witness the arrest and are alone, provide 2 minutes of CPR before leaving the child to activate ERS and get an AED.
If the rescuer leaves a child with repiratory arrest or bradycardia to phone the emergency response system, the child may progress to cardica arrest and the chance of survival will be much lower.
p29, AHA, BLS
How long do you check for a pulse?
Check the child's pulse (take at least 5 but no more than 10 seconds). You may try to feel for the carotid or femoral pulse.
p30, AHA, BLS
Critical Concepts: High quality CPR improves a victims chances of survival. There are 6 concepts what are they?
* Start compressions within 10 seconds of recognition of arrest
*Push hard, push fast
*Allow complete chest recoil
*Minimize interruptions
*Give effective breaths (make the chest rise)
* Avoid excessive breaths
Where do you check for a pulse in an infant?
brachial artery
How do you deliver chest compressions to an infant?
2 fingers for single rescuer and
2 thumb-encircling hands technique for 2 rescuers
p 33 AHA, BLS
What is the depth for chest compressions for infants?
1/3 of the chest, approximately 1 1/2 inches
p 33 AHA BLS
Compression/ventilation ratio for an infant?
15:2 for 2 rescuer
30:2 for 1 rescuer
p33 AHA, BLS
Why do you keep the infants head in a neutral position?
If you tilt an infants head beyond the neutral position , the infants airway may become blocked. Maximize airway patency by positioning the infant with the neck in a neutral position so that the external ear canal is level with the top of the infants shoulders.
p37 AHA BLS
How to relieve choking in a victim 1 yr of age and older?
Use abdominal thrust to relieve choking in a responsive victim. **Do no use abdominal thrust in infants.
Place the thumb side of your fist against the victims abdomin above the navel and well below the breastbone. upward thrusts
p52 AHA, BLS
If the victim is pregnant or obese, how do you relive choking?
chest thrust instead of abdominal thrust
How do you relieve choking in a unresponsive victim 1 yr or older?
ccc
