How many types of blood vessels are there?

There are three types of blood vessels

What is the first type of blood vessel?

The first type of blood vessel is the artery.

What does the artery do?

The artery carries blood away from the heart.

What is the second type of blood vessel?

The capillary.

What does the capillary do?

The capillary carries blood to and for the body's cells.

What is the third type of blood vessel?

The vein.

What does the vein do?

The vein carries blood back into the heart.

Why are there three different types of blood vessels?

There are different types of blood vessel because they perform different functions.

What are these functions?

Arteries carry high pressure blood away from the heart, capillaries are small so that they can reach all of the body's tissues and veins carry low pressure blood and therefore have valves.

What is the basic structure of the artery?

The artery has a thick outer wall, thick inner layer of muscle and elastic fibres as well as a narrow central tube (lumen).

What is the basic structure of the vein?

The vein has a thin outer wall, a thin inner layer of muscle and elastic fibres as well as a wide central tube (lumen).

What is the basic structure of the capillary?

The capillary has a wall only one cell thick.

What is back flow?

Backflow is when blood flows in the wrong direction due to blood flowing against gravity or a vein being squeezed by muscle action.

What do veins have to prevent back flow?

Veins have valves to prevent back flow.

What do valves do?

Valves allow blood to flow in the correct direction but close if blood starts to flow in the wrong direction.
