Test Site Recommendation |
Puncture the side of the top of the finger
If adipose is scant, pinch to gather Test either the side or tip of the finger rather than the center of the finger where the tissue is thinner Never lance directly on the finger print as the nerve endings will cause pain Use a site that they don't normally use at home Preferred sites: - middle and ring finger Nonpreferred sites: - thumb (has a pulse) - index finger (sensitive and callouses) - pinky (skin is too thin) |
Preparing the finger |
Warm the test site using a warm 107°F), moist towel for three to five minutes or by massaging the hand from the palm to the finger tips Cleanse the site using 70 percent isopropyl alcohol and allow it to dry |
Performing the test |
Puncture the site, then use a gauze pad to wipe away the first drop of blood Apply blood to the testing strip according to manufacturer's instructions With a 2" x 2" gauze pad to wipe away any excess blood and then apply slight pressure |
Test site rotation |
Rotating sites reduces the risk of soreness and callousing. |
Issues with milking |
Causes tissue fluid contamination resulting in a false low reading |
Dependent position |
Hanging below heart Increases blood flow and can be used to increase bleeding at the test site |
