Retina blood supply

Retina has two blood supply sources:

-central retina artery

-choroidal blood vessels

Choroid has the most blood flow (65-85%) and is vital for the maintenance of the outer retina.(particularly photoreceptors)

Remaining 20-30% flows to the retina through the central retinal artey from the optic nerve head to nourish inner retinal layers.

Central retinal artery has 4 main branches.

Macular

Macular vessels arise from branches of the superior and inferotemporal arteries.

Anterior intraretinal branches supply 3 layers of capillary networks:

Radial peripapillary capillaries

Inner layer of capilaries

Outer layer of capillaries
