The right atrium receives deoxygenated blood from the body through the inferior and superior vena cava.

The blood moves to the lower portion of the heart through the tricuspid valve. The valve prevents blood from moving back into the right atrium.

The right ventricle fills with blood.

The right ventricle contracts to send the blood through the pulmonary valve to the pulmonary artery and the lungs. The valve prevents blood from returning to the right ventricle.

The left atrium receives oxygenated blood from the lungs through the pulmonary veins.

The blood moves to the lower portion of the heart through the bicuspid (mitral) valve. The valve prevents blood from moving back into the left atrium.

The left ventricle fills with blood.

The blood leaves the heart through the aortic valve to the aorta, which sends the blood to all parts of the body. The valve prevents blood from returning to the left ventricle.
