What are two functions of blood? |
1) Transports oxygen & nutrients to cells of the body 2) Returns waste products from cells |
What is the normal blood volume of an adult? Difference between women and men? |
Between 4.5 L to 5.0 L with women's volume being slightly less than men's. |
What is plasma? |
The liquid component of blood in which the blood cells and platelets are suspended. |
What does plasma consist of? |
Consists of water, electrolytes, and proteins. |
How much of blood is made up of plasma? |
Accounts for more than half of the total blood volume. |
Why is plasma important? |
Regulates blood pressure and temperature. |
How much of the blood volume do red cells make up? |
Approximately 40% |
What do red blood cells contain and what does it allow blood to do? |
They contain hemoglobin, a protein that gives blood its red color and enables it to bind with oxygen. |
What is anemia? How does it affect the blood/body? |
When the number of red blood cells is too low; blood carries less oxygen and results in fatigue and weakness. |
What is polycythemia? How does it affect the blood/body? |
When the number of red blood cells is too high; blood is too thick, increasing the risk of stroke or a heart attack. |
What is the function of blood platelets? What is a term that refers to blood platelets? |
Thrombocytes assist in blood clotting by clumping together at a bleeding site and forming a plug that helps to seal the blood vessels. |
What is a low number of blood platelets called? How does it affect the body? |
Thrombocytopenia increases the risk for bruising and abnormal bleeding. |
What is a high number of blood platelets called? How does it affect the body? |
Thrombocytothemia increases the risk of thrombosis; which may result in a stroke or heart attack. |
What is are leukocytes? What is their function? |
White blood cells protect against infection. |
What is leukopenia? How does it affect the body? |
A low number of white blood cells increases the risk of an infection. |
What is leukocytosis? What does it indicate? |
An abnormally high number of white blood cells can indicate an infection or leukemia? |
What are five types of white blood cells? |
1) Neutrophils 2) Lymphocytes 3) Monocytes 4) Eosinophils 5) Basophils |
What is the function of neutrophils? |
To protect the body against infections by ingesting bacteria and debris. |
What are the three main types of lymphocytes? What is their function? |
T lymphocytes & natural killer cells - help protect against viral infections and can detect and destroy some cancer cells. B lymphocytes - develop into cells that produce antibodies. |
What is the function of monocytes? |
Ingest dead or damaged cells and help defend against infectious organisms. |
What are three functions of eosinophils? |
Kill parasites, destroy cancer cells, and are involved in allergic reactions. |
What do basophils do? |
Participate in allergic responses. |
What is this? |
Erythrocyte or RBC |
What are these? |
Leukocytes or WBC |
Second row - what are each of these? |
Monocyte, basophil, eosinophil, neutrophil & lymphocyte |
