Blood is divided into which two things?
Plasma and cells.
What does plasma contain?
Water, salt, gases, ions, nutrient molecules and proteins.
Which proteins does plasma contain?
Albumin, fibrinogen, globulins( including antibodies ) and other clotting proteins.
Whats the function of Albumin?
It regulates the blood-pressure.
Whats the function of Fibrinogen?
It is partially responsible for clotting of blood.
Whats the function of Globulin?
It functions as a transporter, it is also partially responsible for blood clotting and it supports the immune system.
What is the function of plasma?
Blood clotting, blood pressure regulation, medium of exchange for minerals such as sodium and potassium.
What does the cellular portion of the blood contain?
Red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. These are produced in the bone marrow.
What is the function of Red blood cells?
It transport gases with hemoglobin.
What is hemoglobin?
Hemoglobin is a transporter that transports oxygen throughout the body, it also colors the blood red.
What is plasma? %
90% water
How much of our blood contains plasma?
55%
What is "hematocrit"?
It's the average red blood cell concentration that an average male have in his blood, roughly 47%.
What stimulates the bone marrow to produce red blood cells?
Erythoprotein, which is produced in response to hipoxia in the tissue.
How long do red blood cells live?
Roughly 120 days in the circulatory system, they're eventually removed by the spleen.
What's the function of white blood cells?
White blood cells are responsible for protecting the body from invading foreign substances(bacteria, fungi and viruses).
Where are white blood cells produced and how many are there x:x?
They're produced in the bone marrow, there they're 2:1 vs red blood cells. In the blood stream they're 1:600 vs red blood cells.
What type of white blood cells are there?
Granulocytes and macrophages which protect against infections by surrounding and destroying invading bacteria and viruses.
Lymphocytes that aid in immune system.
What are Platelets?
Platelets are blood clotting cells, together with circulating proteins. They're made in the bone marrow and survive for 9~10 days before being removed by speel.
Who discovered the ABO blood types?
Karl Landsteiner of the University of Vienna discovered ABO in 1900 and 1901 when trying to figure out why some patients died in blood transfusions. He gained a Nobel prize in 1930.
What types of ABO are there?
A, B, O and AB.
Antigen and antibody of A.
Antigen A and Antibody anti-B.
Antigen and antibody of B.
Antigen B and Antibody anti-A
Antigen and antibody of O.
No antigens and Antibody anti-A and Antibody anti-B.
Antigen and antibody of AB.
Antigen A and B no antibodies.
What is a phenotype?
It is the appearance resulting from genotype, brown eyes for example.
What is a genotype?
It is the genetic construction of an organism, BB(brown eyes) for example or AA.
Whats the genotype of A-group phenotype?
AA or Ao.
Whats the genotype of B-group phenotype?
BB or Bo.
Whats the genotype of AB-group phenotype?
AB
Whats the genotype of O-group phenotype?
OO
What's special about AB-group?
It does not produce any antigen so it can receive all type of blood, but it's non-donable.
What's special about OO-group?
It does not have any antibody so it can be donated to anyone, but a OO can only receive OO blood.
