What is the function of blood? |
The function of blood is to carry oxygen and nutrients around the body, to fight infection and carry CO2 and other waste products around the body. |
What is blood composed of? |
Red Blood Cells: They carry the oxygen to our cells White Blood Cells: They are apart of the immune system and destroy infectious agents called pathogens Platelets (carried in the plasma): They clot the blood to seal the wound and prevent a loss of blood. |
What is an antigen? |
Antigens are what our bodies use to identify the blood cells as belonging in our own system (ourself). |
What types and how many types of antigens are there? |
There are two different types of antigens A and B |
What is an antibody? |
The immune system produces proteins known as antibodies that act as protectors if foreign (non-self) cells enter the body Depending on which blood type you have, your immune system will produce antibodies to react against other blood types |
What are the four blood groups? |
Based on the markers found on the RBC (red blood cells). There is blood group A, B, AB, and O. |
Which antibodies and antigens are present in each blood type? |
O has no antigens. A has A antigens B has B antigens AB has A and B antigens O has Anti-A and Anti-B AB has no antibodies B has Anti-A A has Anti-B |
What is the Universal Donor? |
O Blood Type because it has no antigens |
What is the Universal Recipient? |
Type AB blood because they have no antibodies |
Refer to Blood as Evidence PowerPoint for information on figuring out what blood type it is based on reaction with antibodies |
