Red blood cell function

Contains haemoglobin which has the ability to bind to oxygen and this allows it to carry oxygen around the body

They don't contain a nucleus which means there is more room for oxygen in the cytoplasm.


They are biconcave discs which increases their surface area to volume ratio. It allows oxygen to diffuse in and out quicker.

Protect the body from disease by engulfing and digesting pathogens by producing enzymes to digest them

They produce antibodies that immobilise bacteria so it can be engulfed by phagocytes.


They can turn into memory cells that remember how to destroy specific microorganisms
