Red blood cell function |
Contains haemoglobin which has the ability to bind to oxygen and this allows it to carry oxygen around the body |
Red blood cell structure |
They don't contain a nucleus which means there is more room for oxygen in the cytoplasm. They are biconcave discs which increases their surface area to volume ratio. It allows oxygen to diffuse in and out quicker. |
Phagocytes function |
Protect the body from disease by engulfing and digesting pathogens by producing enzymes to digest them |
Phagocytes structure |
They have a multi-lobed nuclei. |
Lymphocytes function |
They produce antibodies that immobilise bacteria so it can be engulfed by phagocytes. They can turn into memory cells that remember how to destroy specific microorganisms |
Lymphocytes structure |
They have a circular nuclei |
Blood plasma function |
Responsible for carrying nutrients, thermal energy and waste products around the body. It carries CO2 from respiring cells to the lungs |
Blood plasma structure |
Yellow coloured liquid that allows the blood to flow |
Platelet function |
Allow the blood to clot when blood vessels are damaged, prevents blood loss and allows scab formation. |
Platelet structure |
They are fragments of cells. |
