The beginnings of literature writen for children.
Chap books , cheap, popular readings sold by pedlars in the 18C, consisted of rhymes, fairy stories and ballads. Designed for the inexperienced reader rather than children per se.
John Newbury produced a series of chap books e.g A little Pretty Pocket Book (1744) with the motto Instruction with Delight. 'It was the first children's book in which amusement rather than religious indoctrination is the central concern' Zipes P. 13.
The Chap books had a picture and a rhyme, followed by a moral such as be good and you will receive material rewards.
The content of the chap books was gendered. Girls rewarded for needle work and obiedience, boys for learning and diligence.
In the chap books both boys and girls were encouraged to read and girls education is presented as important.
Pilgrims Progress by John Bunyan (1678)
An allegorical tale steeped in religious symbolism, about Christian who learns the city he lives in will be destroyed by fire. He sets out on a journey to the City of God.
