In Blackjack, who does the player play against?
Against the dealer. the idea is to get a better hand than the dealer without going over 21. Over 21 is called busting.
How does the player win?
The player wins by getting a higher hand than the dealer.
What is a push?
If both the player and the dealer have the same value hand, than the result is a push, and all bets are returned or "off'.
What if both the player and the dealer bust?
They both lose.
When does the player make his bet?
The bet is made before any cards are dealt. Today, some bets are 5 dollars, or as high as a thousand or higher.
How does the dealer deal the cards?
The dealer deals two cards to both the player and to himself. Both cards for the player are facing up or exposed. The dealer issues himself one exposed card and one unexposed.
How are cards valued.
They are valued by their numeric value. Jacks, Kings or Queens are valued as 10 points. The Ace can be either 1 or 11.
Who goes first in play?
The player goes first, and decides whether to hit or receive another card or to stand, and end his turn.
When does the play switch to the dealer?
Only when the player stands.
How does the dealer decide on hitting or standing?
This is based on the rules of the house.
If the dealers hand is valued at 16 or less, than the dealer must hit (himself). Some dealers can hit on a soft 17.
What is Blackjack?
A hand containing an ace and either a 10, jack, queen or king is known as Blackjack.
If the dealer or the player has Blackjack after the initial cards are dealt, then who wins?
They both win. if both have Blackjack, than the result is a push and bets are returned.
When is the dealers shown or up card is an ace or a 10 valued card, what will he normally do?
He will automatically check the value of his downfacing card to determine whether or not he has Blackjack.
What is doubling down?
When the players turn first begins, he has the option to end his turn by doubling down. This involves doubling the amount of the bet and then being dealt one more card. When the player feels good about winning, this is often done, after having received the final card.
What is a split?
if the player is given two initial cards with the same value than he can split if so desired. If he chooses to split, the dealer separates the two cards into two separate hands and deal another card to each hand. The player is required to bet the amount of the original bet on the new hand. The player starting with the one on the left. then plays both hands as normal. It is technically "double betting".
What is surrender?
At the start of the player's turn, if ones prospects are not good then he may surrender the hand. This forfeits half the bet and the game ends. Not all casinos honor this option.
What is Insurance?
At the start of a player's turn, if the dealers up card is an Ace, the player has the option of buying insurance. This potentially is a side bet which insures against the possibility that the dealer has Blackjack.
Does the player have to pay for insurance?
Yes. The player places an amount equal to half the original bet on the table. if the dealer has Blackjack then the dealer pays 2-to-1 on the insurance bet, as well as returning the insurance bet.
What if the dealer doesn't have Blackjack?
Then the insurance bet is lost and the game proceeds.
This option is not honored by all casinos.
What is meant by hard and soft hands?
A soft hand is one which has at least one Ace that can be counted as high value (value 11), without busting. The hand has different values based on whether the Ace is counted high or low.(value 1) Counting them as high would cause a bust.
