Black Death

The epidemic of bubonic plague that ravaged Europe, Asia, and N. Africa in the 14th c., killing 1/3-1/2 of the population.

Causes of the thing

Y. pestis causes three kinds of plague (bubonic, septicemic, and pneumonic)


Bubonic carried by fleas on backs of rats, humans catch it if bitten


attacks lymphatic system, producing enormous swellings (bulboes) of the lymph nodes in the groin, neck, and armpits


Septicemic occurs when an infected flea introduces the microbe directly into the human blood stream, death within hours


pnuemonic results when Y. pestis infects lungs, spreads in the same way as the common cold

reactions ranged from panic to resignation

some believed it was caused by breathing "bad air" and urged people to flee from stricken areas, which only made it spread faster
