Ecological Succession
The process of gradual change from one community of organisms to another.
Primary Succession
Succession in a place that does not have soil.
Pioneer Community
The first community of organisms to inhabit an area. Hardy organisms that can survive harsh conditions.
Secondary Succession
Succession in a place that has soil and was once the home of living organisms.
Climax Community
The community at the final stage of ecological succession.
List 5 factors that affect climate.
Temperature, Latitude, Elevation, Precipitation, Presence of a mountain range or Ocean
Latitude
Distance north or south from the equator.
Elevation
Distance above sea level.
Rain Shadow Effect
Air rises & cools as it goes up one side of a mountain, releasing the moisture and creating a desert on the other side.
Biome
Large geographic areas with similar climates and ecosystems(plants and animals)
Tundra
cold, dry, treeless region, located in latitudes surrounding the north pole, permafrost
Permafrost
a layer of permanently frozen soil in the Tundra
Taiga (Coniferous Forest)
cold region of cone bearing trees, few shrubs and grasses
Temperate Deciduous Forest
Mild temperature region, with trees that shed their leaves, 4 seasons, moderate rainfall
Tropical Rain Forest
warm and humid region with lush plant life and a huge number of animals, located near the equator, greatest annual precipitation
Grassland
temperate and tropical regions with precipitation levels too low to support trees, fertile soil (rich in nutrients)
Desert
Driest biome with minimal biodiversity, hot days, cold nights
Name the freshwater biomes.
Rivers, Streams, Lakes, Ponds
Oligotrophic Lake
Clear lake with high levels of oxygen and few plants (low in nutrients)
Eutrophic Lake
Murky lake, high in nutrients and plant life
Name the salt water biomes.
Estuary, seashore, Ocean
What is an Estuary?
An area where a freshwater river meets the salty ocean.
A biome is determined mainly by
temperature and precipitation
What is an ecosystem?
Community or organisms interacting with abiotic factors.
