endocytosis
the process by which a cell membrane engulfs particles of molecules outside the cell and pinches around it to form a vesicle that carries the material into the cell.
exocytosis
The process by which a vesicle transports particles or molecules for within the cell to the cell membrane, where it fuses with the membrane and deposits its contents outside the cell.
osmosis
the diffusion of a fluid, such as water, across a membrane to equalize the concentrations of solutions on either side of the membrane.
phospholipid
lipid with a phosphate head attached to two long lipid tails.
phospholipid bilayer
the double layer of phospholipid molecules that makes up the membranes of a cell.
semi-permeable, selectively permeable
allowing only certain substances to pass through, while blocking passage of other substances.
diffuse(v) diffusion(n)
to move, or the movement of, substances down a concentration gradient from higher to lower concentration.
active transport
movement of a substance form lower to higher concentration through a protein carrier, requiring energy input usually provided by conversion of ATP to ADP
facilitated diffusion
movement of substance from higher to lower concentration through a protein channel, without the need for input of energy.
passive transport
same as facilitated diffusion.
macromolecule
a large biological molecule such as a protein include such as a protein include acid, or carbohydrate made of one or more chains of smaller sub units linked together.
lipid bilayer
the double layer of lipids in cell or organelle membranes
contrast
(N) the fact of comparing two or more things in order to show the differences between them. (V) to compare two things in order to show the differences between them
respiration
(N) the act of breathing.
aerobic
(ADJ) needing oxygen.
photosynthesis
(N)the process by which green plants turn carbon dioxide and water into food using energy obtained from light from the sun
Structure
(N) the way in which the parts of something are connected together, arranged, or organized; a particular arrangement of parts
(V)to arrange or organize something into a system or pattern.
anaerobic
(ADJ) not needed oxygen.
mitochondria
(N) a small part found in most cells, in which the energy in food is released
magnifying glass
N a piece of glass, usually with a handle, that you look through and that makes things look bigger than they really are
