What are the 3 types of Lipids

-Triglycerides ( Fat for energy store, insulation, protection of organs) -Phospholipids ( to make membranes) -Cholesterol ( for membrane stability and to make hormones

What's the structure of a Triglyceride?

- Made of 1 Glycerol and 3 fatty acids

-Joined by a condensation reaction, ester bonds

- Bond is COOC

-there are two types of triglycerides. unsaturated and saturated

What is the difference between unsaturated fat and saturated fat?

Saturated contains as much hydrogen in the R group as possible

Unsaturated contains a double bond in the hydrogen tail on the R group preventing hydrogen from attaching

What is the structure of a phospholipid?

Made of 1 glycerol, 2 fatty acids and a phosphate

How is a phospholipid bilayer formed?

-In a phospholipid the fatty acids form hydrophobic tables ( repel water) while the phosphate head forms a hydrophilic head ( attracts water) .
