MRS C GREN: Why is the pneumonic MRS C GREN important when studying biology?
Because you need to know what it stands for to be able to distinguish between living and non living things
MRS C GREN: What words does MRS C GREN represent?
Movement

Respiration

Sensitivity

Circulation

Growth

Reproduction

Excretion

Nutrition
MRS C GREN: What does the E in it stand for? What is this?
The E stands for Excretion

It gets rid of waste products (Eg. Urine and CO2)
MRS C GREN: What does the first R stand for? What is this?
Respiration

Turns food and oxygen into energy and CO2
MRS C GREN: What does the M stand for? What is this?
Movement

body parts move naturally
MRS C GREN: What does the S stand for? What is this?
Sensitivity

Feels, smells, hears, tastes, sees or reacts to changes in its environment
MRS C GREN: What does C stand for? What is this?
Circulation

Moves chemicals around its body (eg. blood in animals)
MRS C GREN: What does G stand for? What is this?
Growth

Makes new cells to get a bigger and bigger body
MRS C GREN: What does N stand for? What is this?
Nutrition

Eats and uses food to get energy
MRS C GREN: If an organism has 4 of these 8 criteria, is it still living?
No. For an organism to be living, it has to possess all 8 of the criteria for a living creature
KPCOFGS: Why is the Pneumonic KPCOFGS important?
Because it represents the words that scientists use to group living organisms
KPCOFGS: What does the Pneumonic KPCOFGS stand for? The silly way
Kinky
Policemen
Climb
Over
Fat
Green
Sausages
KPCOFGS: What does KPCOFGS stand for in scientific terms?
Kingdom
Phyllum
Class
Order
Family
Genus
Species
KPCOFGS: What does the F stand for?
Family
KPCOFGS: What does the C stand for?
Class
KPCOFGS: What does the S stand for?
Species
Scientists _________ ________ by using the Pneumonic _ _ _ _ _ _ _
Scientists group organisms by using the Pneumonic KPCOFGS
Most individuals have 2 part names in Science. What are these 2 names?
It is made up from the:

Genus Group (capital letter)
Species Group (small letter)
What language are the names of individuals in?
Latin
Most living things can be classified as either: ___________ or ____________
Most living things can be classified as either plant or animal
What is the basic difference between plants and animals?
How they feed.
Plants are ______________ or ____________. They make their food from a _______ called _________
Plants are self feeding or autrotrophic. They make their food from a process called photosynthesis
Animals are _____________ because they __________ make their own food and must feed on other ____________
Animals are heteotrophs because they cannot make their own food and must feed on other organisms
If you look at the name Homo sapiens, which of those two names is the genus name?
Homo
What is a genus?
A closely related group of species (Eg, jackals, dogs and wolves)
What is the most basic group of organisms?
Species
What are related species put into?
A genus
What are similar genera put into?
A family
What are similar orders put into?
A class
What are similar classes put into?
A phylum
What are related phyla put into?
A kingdom
Why do you make a key?
To classify something into groups
How do you make a key?
You ask questions that narrow down the groups and only apply to one of the group.
How many types of adaptations are there? What are these?
4.

Structural
Physiological
Behavioural
Life Cycle
What is structural adaptation?
Is some part of an organism which helps it carry out one of the life functions

It is some part of the organism that helps it. eg. dogs have hair to keep them warm, this is a structural adaptation
What is a physiological adaptation?
A chemical process inside organism which aids its survival

It involves a process inside the organism, it is to do with a body chemistry. A dog has powerful protein digesting enzymes to help it digest its food
What is a behavioural adaptation?
Is some activity that an animal does which enables it (or its group)to survive better

eg. dogs hunt in packs so they are more effective hunters
What is a life cycle adaptation?
One where the different stages of life help it to survive.

eg. dog has short puppy stage so they are able to feed for themselves faster
Niche
Within a habitat, a special area with special conditions that supplies a species with factors necessary for its survival. A niche describes how members make a living. It also includes their adaptations (what special features they have to survive)
Food chains: Energy always starts with a _______
plant
What are plants known as?
Producers
How does a producer make its own food?
It makes its own food from using sunlight
The animals that eat other organisms are called what?
Consumers
Consumers are always ___________
consumers are always animals
The first animal to eat the plant is called the ____________ ____________
Primary consumer
The second animal to get the energy from the plant is the ____________ ________
Secondary consumer
What are the three types of consumer?
Herbivores - eat only plants
Omnivores - eat both plants and meat
Carnivores - eat only meat
Who is the top predator?
The animal at the top of the food chain.
What is the third consumer called?
Tertiary consumer
After primary, secondary and tertiary consumers, how do you write the other ones?
You put the number they are with a degrees symbol above them and then consumer after them
Habitat
the natural home or environment of an organism.
