What is energy measured in?

Joules

Why do organisms need energy?

For metabolism; movement; active transport; maintenance, repair and division of cells; production of substances and maintenance of body temperate.

How does ATP store energy?

ATP has 3 phosphate groups. When the unstable bonds between these groups break, a considerable amount of energy is released.

What is the equation to show how ATP stores energy?

ATP + H2O ---> ADP + Pi + ENERGY

Why is ATP a better energy store than glucose?

1. ATP releases energy in more manageable quantities.

2. ATP energy release is much quicker than energy release from glucose because ATP releases energy from one reaction, whereas the breakdown of glucose is a long series of reactions.

What are the 3 ways in which ATP is synthesised from ADP?

1. Photo phosphorylation.

2. Oxidative phosphorylation.

3. Substrate-level phosphorylation
