How efficient is the process transfer between trophic level? (Explain the pyramid of energy)
The efficiency of transfer between each trophic level is 10% of the energy. (The pyramid of energy represents energy transfer passed down from each trophic level. The producers have the most and then the herbivores have the 2nd most...etc)
What affect does this have on abundance of organisms at various trophic levels? (Explain the pyramids of numbers)
The population of the higher trophic levels is less because the larger animals arent able to survive with the lack of energy given by the smaller animals.
What affect does this have on the total biomass at various trophic levels? (explain the pyramid of biomass)
The organic material(biomass) decreased to 10% of the material going to the next trophic level. So the more the biomass is transfered to a higher level the less mass will be passed on.
What is the source for all the energy in an ecosystem?
The sun is the source for all the energy in our ecosystem.
Explain the difference between abiotic and biotic factors. Give 3 examples of each.
Biotic - Living components in the enviroment.
Abiotic - Non living factors in our enviroment
Examples:
Biotic: People, Animals, Plants
Abiotic: Rock, Oxygen, Temperature
List the 3 main reasons why some energy does not get passed onto the next trophic level
Energy is lost through digestion, through heat, and not parts of the animal is eaten
Explain the difference between a food web and food chain. Be able to interpret and draw both a food web and a food chain.
A food web is a interconnected food chains in our ecosystem.(Nodes and Edges) A food chain is a pathway beginning with the producer and transferring from trophic level to trophic level.
Why are organism at the bottom trophic levels more common then those at the top of the trophic levels?
Animals at the bottom of the trophic levels are more common because they have to eat less animals to recieve more energy than the larger animals. The larger animals cant grow to a greater population than the smaller animals because they dont get as much energy from each meal.
Draw the water cycle(5 main processes)and explain what occurs during each step.
Water vapor -- Precipitation -- Runoff -- Percolation in soil -- Evaporation
Draw the carbon cycle(4 main processes)and explain what occurs during each step.
Photosynthesis -- Animal eats plant -- Death or decombustion -- Fossil fuels -- combustion -- carbon dioxide in atmoshpere
Explain the importance of the decomposers in the Carbon cycle.
Decomposers are vital to the carbon cycle because it is one of the major sources that creates carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Describe 4 factors which affect population size, and determine whether they increase or decrease the total population.
Things that may limit a species population are too many predators, not enough space, not enough food, and death rate is greater than birth rate.
Exponential growth and logistics growth:
Draw the shape of the curve for both
Give the conditions under which each type of growth would occur?
Do we actually ever see these types of growth?
Exponential growth - The shape of the graph will look like a "j" shape. The conditions for this to occur is when the population hasd little and then the predators die off and then the population increases greatly. Yes we do see these types of growths.
Logistics growth - The graph is the shape of a "s" curve. The conditions for this to happen is when the population starts low and when a predator dies the organism increases population, later it cant increase in population size because of lack of space so the population stays the same. This is a possible scenario in real life.
What is an organelle or cell structure?
Organelles or cell structures are cell components that perform specific functions for the cell.
