What is a Dependent Variable? Where is it on the Graph?
It is the variable that changes based of the Independent variable and it is usually what is measured. Y axis
What is an Independent Variable? Where is it on the Graph
It is the varialble the experimenter changes. X axis
What is Abiogenisis? What is its second name?
It is the idea that living things can arise spontaneously. Spontaneous Generation
What is Biogenisis? What was the first experimenter to test agains Abiogenisis?
The idea that all living things come from other living things. Franscisco Redi
Who was Louis Pasteur?
A famous scientist of the 1900th century. He had many accomplishments.
What did aristotle observe? Did he support biogenisis or Abiogenisis? When did he live?
He saw that living things seemed to come from non living things ex: maggots on bad meat. Abiogenisis. 400 BC
What test did Redi try, to prove spontaneous generation wrong? When did he live?
He did the covered jar of meat and the uncovered jar of meat. 1600's
Which side did Needham try to prove? What expirement did he do? When did he live? What was wrong with his expirement
Abiogenisis. He had a bottle filled with broth seeled and heated. He then found it still had micro-organisms living in it. He did not heat it enough. 1700's
Which side did Spallanzani try to prove? What expirement did he do? When did he live?
Biogenisis. He did something similar to Needham. He filled 2 flask with brooth. Heated them more than Needham did, to make sure he killed everything. Seeled one container right after and found the one that was not covered after a few days grew micoorganisms from the air and the other did not. 1700's
Who did Pasteur go up against to try and prove Abiogenisis wong? When? What was Pasteurs expirement?
Pouchet. 1800's. He created the S shaped flask. Filled it with broth, boiled it, letting air in but not other organism from the air. No microorganisms. Broke the neck and let air and microorganisms come in. Found micoorganisms.
What was Pouchet's expirement? What side did he support? What was wrong with it? When did he complete his expirement?
He put a hay infusion into a bottle. Heated it and closed off the top. Later he found micororganisms living in it. Abiogenisis. The micoorganisms were clostridium botulinum (botulism) there spores are heat resistant so the heat did not kill the ones living on the hay. 1700's
What did Leevwenhoek discover? What did he call them.
He discovered Microorganisms. "animalcules"
What is a hypothesis? How is it different than a Theory?
It is a posible answer to a set of observations. Scientific theory has never been proven wrong and has been tested many times, a hypothesis is the guess.
What is a Scientific Theory? What is a Scientific Law?
How are they different?
Theory is a explaination for a wide range of hypotheses. Law is a mathmatical calculation that is generaly accepted but not explained. Laws dont explain why, theories do.
What are the 9 characteristics of living things?
Cells, Reproduction, growth, development, use of energy (metabolism),
response to stimuli, homeostasis, populations evolve, genetic code
What is sexual reproduction? Asexual reproduction?
Sexual: cells from two different parednts unite to produce the frist cell of the new organism
Asexual: There is only one parent. One type is a part of the parent splits off and forms a new organism, another, a cell spilts in two to for two new organisms.
What are two types of organisms based of the number of cells.
Unicellular: one celled (ex. Micororganism)
Multicellular: many (ex: humans, plants.)
What carries the genetic code for each different organism?
It's DNA
Are growth and Development the same?
No.
What is the difference between growth and development?
Growth refers to the number of cells or the size of the organims, development refers to the complexity of the organism.
What is metabolism? What charicteristic of a living thing is it linked to?
it is the combination of chemical reactions throught which an organism builds up or breaks down materials as it carries out life processes. Need for energy.
What is the main source of energy for ALL living things?
The sun
What is stimulus?
A factor in the environment which an organism responds to.
What is homeostasis?
The balance and maintenance of stable internal conditions
Which level of organization can evolve? Which can adapt?
Population
An organism
What are the levels of organization?
Atoms-Molecules-Cells-Tissues- Organs- Organ systems- organism- population- community- ecosystem- Biome- Biosphere
The study of microorganisms
Microbiology
The study of bacteria
Bacteriology
The study of viruses
Virology
The study of cells
Cytology

What is technology?
Applied Science
What are the prefixes of the metric system?
Kilo- Hecto- Deka- Liter, Gram, Meter- Deci- Centi- Milli- Micro (1 micro= 1000 Milli)
