Cell

The smallest functional and structural unit of all living organism

Organism

Any living thing that can survive on its own

Robert Hooke

Was the first person to describe cells

Why are cells small?

Their size is limited by their outer surface area. If a cell gets too large, there won't be enough room to take in nutrients or pump out wastes

Cell Theory

Results of many scientist's work. 1. All organisms are made up of one or more cells. 2. The cell is the basic unit of all organisms. 3. All cells come from existing cells.

Anton van Leewenhoek

Was the first person to describe actual living cells

Matthias Schleiden

He concluded that all plants are made of cells

Theodor Schwann

He wrote two parts of the cell theory. He determined that all animal tissues are made of cells. Concluded that all organisms are made up of one or more cells. He concluded the cell is the basic unit of all living things.

1st and 2nd part of cell theory

Unicellular Organisms

Organisms that are made up of just one cell. The single cell carries out all the functions for life.

Mutlicelluar Organisms

Organisms made up of more than one cell. The cells of these organisms often have specialized functions.

Rudolf Virchow

He concluded that cells could only form from the division of other cells.

Third part of cell theory

What parts do all cells have in common?

Cell membranes, cytoplasm, organelles, and DNA

Cell membrane

A protective layer that covers a cell surface and acts as a barrier between the inside of the cell and the cell's environment. Controls materials such as water and oxygen that move in and out of the cell.

Cytoplasm

The region inclosed by the cell membrane that includes fluids and organelles

Organelles

Small body that in a cell's cytoplasm that is specialized to perform a specific function.

DNA

Deoxyribonucleic acid. A genetic material that provides instructions for cell processes.

Prokaryotic Cells

A single celled organism that doesn't have a nucleus or membrane covered organelles. Smaller than eukaryotes. The DNA is located in the cytoplasm
