What is meiosis?
It is the process by which chromosomes are reduced by half
What is the reduction division?
Meiosis
What is equation division?
Mitosis
What is a somatic cell?
A cell that does NOT produce gametes and does NOT undergo meiosis
What is a germinative cell?
A cell that undergoes meiosis and produces gametes
What are homologous chromosomes?
When, in a somatic cell, the chromosomes occur in matched pairs
What happens during First interphase in meiosis?
Genetic material form in chromatin
What happens during First Prophase in meiosis?
Chromatin condenses, homologous chromosomes undero synapsis (four chromatids = tetrad),centrioles duplicate and migrate to poles of the cell, spindle fibers begin to appear, and nuclear membrane disappears
What happens during First Metaphase?
Tetrads line up on the equatorial plane
What happens during First Anaphase?
Tetrads split apart
What happens during the First Telophase?
Each pole has the haploid number of replicated chromosomes. Cytokinesis occurs
What happens during Second Interphase?
It does NOT occur. Interkinesis occurs and no DNA replication occurs
What happens during Second Prophase?
Centrioles duplicate and divide and new spindle fibers appear, at a right angle to the first set
What happens during Second Metaphase?
The chromosomes line up on the equatorial plane of the new cells and the centromeres divide
What happens during Second Telophase?
Cytokinesis, new nuclear membranes appear, and chromosomes elongate and become chromatin
Cells in the diploid organism undergo...?
Meiosis
Haploid cells formed are...?
Meiospores
The diploid plant that produces them is the...?
Sporophyte
What are female meiopores called?
Megaspores
What are male meiospores called?
Microspores
What are gametophytes?
Multicellular haploid plants produced from megaspores and microspores
Male gametophytes produce...?
Sperm cells
Female gametophytes produce...?
Egg cells
The egg cell and sperm cell fuse (syngamy) to form...?
The zygote
