What is ecology?

The study of organisms and their relationship within the environment. Ecology is impacted by environmental fdactors.

What are the environmental factors of Ecology?

Abiotic - all non-living things in the environment.


Biotic- all living parts of the environment.

What are the types of Abiotic factors?

Edaphic factors which are associated with the soil such as ph texture, temperature, organic and mineral content.


Aquatic factors such as salinity, wave action and dissolved oxygen.


Topography factors which are associated with physical features of the earth and climatic factors such as light, rainfall,etc.

What are biotic factors?

This result from the activities of the living organisms on the environment.All the feeding relationships that occur between the living organisms, camouflage, pollination,etc.make up the biotic part of the environment.

What is a habitat?

A habitat is the place where an organism lives. A very small habitat is called a micro habitat.


NB. A niche is the important role an organism plays in the environment .

What are populations and communities?

A population is a group of organisms of the same species which live in a particular habitat.


A community consists of all the populations which live in the same place and interact with each other.

What is symbiosis and the types?

Any relationship that exists when different species of organisms live together. The types are mutualism , commensalism and parasitism.

Explain the three type of symbiosis

In this kind of association two organisms of different species live closely together and both benefit, for example egret and cow.


the is a relationship between two species in which one clearly benefits and the other not harmed, for example shark and remora.

What is a parasite?

A parasite is an organism which feeds on another animal from external and internal .

What are the types of parasites?

The ectoparasite are found on the surface of the animal and the endoparasites are found on the inside of the animal.
