Nucleus

Control center of the cell which contains DNA.

Ribosome

Site where proteins are made (synthesized).

Cell Membrane

Lipid bilayer that allows for the transport of molecules and keeps the cell together.

Cell Wall

Structure only found in plants. It is thick, rigid and gives structures to plants.

Chloroplast

Structure only found in plants that is used by plants to produce food (sugar/glucose).

Mitochondria

Organelle that is used during cellular respiration to produce energy in the form of ATP.

Eukaryotes

Cells that contain their DNA within a nucleus.

Prokaryotes

Cells that do not have a nucleus; their DNA is contained within the cytoplasm of the cell.

Active Transport

Requires energy to move substances across a cell membrane.

Passive Transport

Does not require energy to move substances across a cell membrane.

Osmosis

A specialized type of cell transport where WATER is moved from an area of high to low concentration.

Hypertonic

The cell has a greater concentration of solute inside the cell compared to outside of the cell.

Hypotonic

The cell has a lower concentration of solute inside the cell compared to outside of the cell.

Isotonic

The concentration of solute inside the cell is equal to the concentration outside of the cell.

Mitosis

Process by which cells divide to make identical copies.
