What is diffusion?

net movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration down a concentration gradient through a semi-permeable membrane. (passive - requires no energy)

What are 2 examples of diffusion in the human body?

- oxygen in blood from lungs

- nutrients in intestine to blood capillaries

What is osmosis?

net movement of water molecules from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration down a concentration gradient through a semi-permeable membrane. (passive - requires no energy)

What is active transport?

active transport uses energy to pump ions against the concentration gradient. requires energy

How does temperature affect diffusion?

At higher temperatures molecules have more kinetic energy and somove and diffuse faster.

How does pressure affect diffusion?

Molecules move quickly from an area of higher to lower pressure.

How does concentration affect diffusion?

The greater the concentration gradient the greater the diffusionrate.
