Diffusion

Movement of particles down a concentration gradient and move randomly till they are evenly spread

How are particles able to move?

Liquid and gas particles arent in fixed positions and therefore are able to freely move over one another

What kind of transport is it?

Passive Transport

Passive Transport

Doesnt require any energy

Cells use it to get important particles in and out of them

What do the particles have to pass through?

A selectively permeable membrane, good for small molecules (oxygen and carbon dioxide)

4 factors that affect the rate of diffusion

Distance

Concentration gradient

Surface area

Temperature

Distance

The bigger the distance the slower the rate of diffusion

Concentration gradient

High --> Low

Steeper the gradient the faster the rate of diffusion

Examples of diffusion

Digestive System

Lung

Leaves
