What does the field of ecology study?
The interactions between species and within each species in the community.
What is a succession?
A gradual process in which the species composition in an area can change, and one community gives way to another. (A grassy meadow can become overgrown with trees and become a forest community.)
What is a niche?
The role that an organism plays in a community.
What does the competitive exclusion principle state about the niche?
That no two species of organisms can occupy the same niche in the same place and time.
What is the difference between intraspecific competition and interspecific compeition?
Intraspecific competition occurs between individuals of the same species, and interspecific competition occurs between species.
What is the difference between Batesian mimicry and Mullerian mimicry?
Batesian mimicry is when a harmless species resembles a dangerous species. A Mullerian mimicry is when two poisonous species look alike.
What is the difference between the k-selected species and the r-selected species?
The k-selected species produce few offspring, invest heavily in parental care, and thus have offspring with a good chance of surviving to reproductive age. R-selected species has a large number of offspring and provides little parental investment, with the result that only a few offspring survive to reproduce.
