What is the Order of Classification? |
Kingdom --> Phylum --> Class --> Order --> Family --> Genus --> Species |
What are the 6 Kingdoms? |
Monera, Prokaryotae, Protista, Fungi, Animals, Plants |
What is the Hierarchy System? |
The hierarchy system is a system used to classify organisms into groups based on simliar characteristics |
What is the Cell Theory? |
The Cell Theory is one of the basic principles of biology. It states that all living things are composed of cells. |
What is the Species Concept? |
A species can be definied as two organisms that are able to reproduce viable offspring |
What is a Dichotomous Key? |
A dichotomous key is a method for determining the identity of something (like the name of a butterfly, a plant, a lichen, or a rock) by going through a series of choices that leads the user to the correct name of the item. Dichotomous means "divided in two parts". |
What is the Difference Between a Plant Cell and a Animal Cell? |
Plant Cells have a Large Vacuole, Cell Membrane and Chloroplasts |
What is the Difference Between a Eukaryote and a Prokaryote? |
Eukaryotes: Large, DNA in nucleus; bounded by membrane, Mitosis and Meiosis sexual reproduction common |
What is the Difference between Monocots and Dicots? |
The big difference that most people note about monocots and dicots is the formation of the plants’ veins on leaves. However, there are many different things that separate monocots from dicots. In fact, monocots differ from dicots in four structural features: their leaves, stems, roots and flowers. |
What is Binomial Nomenclature? |
Binomial nomenclature (also called binominal nomenclature or binary nomenclature) is a formal system of naming species of living things by giving each a name composed of two parts, both of which use Latin grammatical forms, although they can be based on words from other languages. |
How are Scientific Names Written? |
Scientific names come in two parts (thus, binomial), the first part the genus (plural, genera), the second part the species (plural, species). The genus names is always capitalized, and the species name is never capitalized (even if it is a proper noun!). The genus and species namesare always italicized or underlined. |
Name the 5 Classes of the Chordate Phylum? |
Bony Fish, Amphibia, Reptilia, Aves, Mammalia |
What are the characteristics of Bony Fish? |
Gills and Scales Cold blooded Exothermic 2 chambered heart May be divided into 3 classes |
What are the characteristics of Amphibia? |
Naked skin Soft eggs Need water Kids have gills and and adults have lungs Exothermic |
What are the characteristics of Reptilia? |
Exothermic Scales Mostly soft eggs except blue tongue lizard |
What are the characteristics of Aves? |
Endothermic Feathers Wings Beaks |
What are the characteristics of Mammalia? |
Endothermic Fur Live babies |
What are the three types of Arthropoda? |
Crustacea Arachnida Insecta |
What are the tree types of Symmetry? |
Radial - Jellyfish Bilateral - Human Spiral - Snail |
What is the difference between a bryophyte and a tracheophyte? |
Bryophytes are not vascular and usually live in moist environments e.g mosses |
What are the characteristics of Angiospermae? |
Flowering plants, grasses, herbs, shrubs, and trees All produce flowers Produce seeds inside a specialised fruit 500 000 species Monocots and Dicots |
What are the characteristics of Pteridophyta (Ferns) |
Reproduce spores Usually ground plants, but maybe epiphytic or tree like Mostly large leaves with branching veins Live in moist environments (free swimming sperm) Have alternation of generations (a 2 part life cycle) |
What are the characteristics of Coniferopsida? |
Conifers e.g. pines, firs, cypresses, cedars, and redwoods, mainly northern hemisphere Mostly large woody land plants Usually scale like needle leaves Gamates produced in separate cones BOY AND GIRL CONES ON THE SAME TREE Naked seeds develop in cones (not enclosed in fruit) |
What are the characteristics of Ginkgopsida? |
Ginkgo or Maiden-hair tree Fan shaped deciduous leaves with veins branching in two's Distinct male and female plants Seeds naked on scales 1 surviving species, in China |
What are the characteristics of Cycadopsida? |
Cycads Palm life plants Leaves large and subdivided in a pinnate way Gamates produced in cones on different plants Cones massive and fleshy Seeds naked on scales of cone 100 species |
What are the 5 classes of Tracheophytes? |
Angiospermae, Pteridophyta, Coniferopsida, Ginkgopsida, Cycadopsida |
What are the characteristics of insecta? |
3 body segments Antannae Wings Respiration via Spiricles |
What are the characteristics of arachnida? |
4 pairs of legs No antannae Jaws absent Book lungs for respiration |
