Pharynx
A tube at the back of the mouth (throat).
Myocardium
Thick middle muscle layer of the heart the pumps blood through the circulatory system.
Pulmonary Circulation
Pathway in which the right side of the heart pumps blood to the lungs.
Atrium
Chamber of the heart which receives blood.
Ventricle
Chamber of the heart that pumps out blood.
Sestemic Circulation
Pathway in which the left side of the heart pumps blood to all of the body, except for the lungs.
Valves
Flap of connective tissue between an atrium and a ventricle that prevents backflow of blood.
Pacemaker
Small group of cardiac mucsle cells in the right atrium that set the pace for the hear as a whole.
Aorta
Large blood vessel through which blood travels from the left ventricle to all parts of the body, excpet the lungs.
Arteries
Large blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the tissues of the body.
Capallaries
Smallest blood vessel - brings nutrients and Oxygen to the tissues and absorbs Carbon Dioxide and waste products.
Veins
A blood vessel that returns blood to the heart.
Plasma
Straw colored fluid that makes up 55% of blood - consists of about 90% water and 10% dissolved gasses, salts, nutrients, enzymes, hormones, waste products, and plasma protienes.
Hemoglobin
Iron-containing protien in red blood cells that transports Oxygen from the lungs to the tissues of the body.
Phagocytes
A white blood cell that engulfs and digests foreign cells.
Platelet
Cell fragment released by bone marrow into the blood stream.
Lymph
Fluid lost by the blood into surrounding tissue.
Trachea
Windpipe - tube in which air moves.
Larynx
Structure in the throat containing vocal chords.
Bronchi
Passageway leadging from the trachea to the lungs.
Alvioli
Tiny air sacs at the end of the bronchiole, in the lungs, that provide surface area for gas exchange to occur.
Diaphragm
Large flat muscle at the bottom of the chest cavity that contracts during breathing, pulling the bottom of the chest cavity down and increasing volume.
Nicotine
Stimulant drug in tobacco that increases heart and blood pressure.
Emphysema
Disease in which the tissues of the lungs lose elasticity making breathing difficult.
Atherosclerosis
Condition in which fatty deposits called plaque build up on the walls of the arteries.
Sphygmomanometer
Device used to measure blood pressure.
