Emergent properties
when single things come together and form more complex behaviors collectively
Cohesion
Tendency of molecules to stick to each other
Adhesion
Tendency of molecules to stick to other substances
Surface Tension (Relating to water)
Results when the water molecules on the surface of the water are only attached to molecules below them in the actual water, thus having no H-Bonds with any molecules above them. Causing their surface to remain very strong
Specific Heat
amount of heat a substance needs to absorb in order to increase the temperature of 1g of substance by 1C.
Waters Specific Heat
1g per / 1 Degree C
High Heat Capacity
Substance can absorb more energy or more heat with a smaller change in temperature
High Heat of Evaporation
Regarding converting a substance from a liquid to a gas. Higher heat means its going to take more heat in order to make this change of state.
Explain why ice is less dense then liquid water
-Due to the way the hydrogen bonds are form when liquid is in a solid state, there is more distance between the individual molecules therefore causing the ice to be less dense and float.
Explain why ice being less dense then liquid water is essential to life on earth
-First, when a lake freezes if ice was more dense it would sink therefore causing the lake to freeze from the bottom up and eliminating life on the bottom to the top as it travels
-Second, when the top layer freezes it actually insulates the lower portion on the water not allowing it to freeze and maintaining life
Solution
A homogeneous mixture formed by combining a solvent and a solution
Solvent
is the liquid in which the substance is dissolved
Solute
Substance being dissolved in the solvent
explain "like dissolves like"
-Due to the fact that H2O is a polar molecule and has a strong polar end, it bonds well with other polar molecules therefore allowing it to break other molecules apart
Hydration Shell
-Due to the face that water is very polar the H2O molecules will completely surround another molecule causing a shell of the H20, and ultimately ripping the molecule apart.
Acid
Substance that increases the H+ concentration in a solution
Base
Decreases the concentration of H+ in a solution
Buffers ,
Resist change in pH, minimize changes in the concentration of the H+.
Accept hydrogen ions when an acid is added, and donates when a base is added
