Cell
The cell is the structural and functional unit of organism.

Diseases such as cancer and diabetes are caused by cells malfunctioning, not organs.
The Cell Theory
“All organisms are composed of cells and that cells come only from preexisting cells.”
Why are cells small?
A large surface area compared to volume ratio is necessary for material to move into and out of the cell
Prokaryotic Cells
*Belong to bacteria
-Smaller
-Simpler
-No membrane bound organelles
Bacteria
Can cause disease
*Are decomposers
*Convert atmospheric nitrogen into *a usable form by plants
*Help humans digest their food
Plasma membrane
Surrounds the cell

controls what enters and leaves the cell
Cytoplasm
The semifluid solution encased by the plasma membrane
The Organelles
The small structures found in the cytoplasm that have a specific structure and function
The nucleus
Contains the DNA.

Chromosomes contain DNA and protein.

DNA contains the genetic information
Ribosomes
Both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells contain ribosomes. They are smaller in prokaryotic cells.

They contain two subunits –one large and one small. Each subunit is a mix of protein and RNA.
