Mitosis |
Cellular division where one cell divides into two identical cells. Occurs in body somatic cells |
Interphase |
Phase of cell division where the cell grows, replicates it's DNA and prepares for cell division. |
Has 4 stages. |
Prophase |
First stage of mitosis. Chromosomes condense. Centrioles move to opposite sides. |
Metaphase |
Second phase of mitosis. Chromosomes line up in the middle. |
Anaphase |
Third stage of mitosis. Chromosomes separate and move to opposite sides of the cell. |
Telophase |
4th stage of mitosis. Cell splits in two. In animal cells, the cleavage Furrow forms and in plant cells the cell plate forms. |
The last stage |
Mutation |
Change in a cell's DNA. Can lead to uncontrollable cell growth. |
Cancer |
When a cell divides uncontrollably creating tumors. |
Meiosis |
Cell division where cells go through two rounds of division. Results in 4 cells. Daughter cells have half the amount of chromosomes as the parent (original) cell. Creates gametes. |
Diploid |
Two sets of chromosomes. E.g. Normal body cells |
Haploid |
1 set of chromosomes. E.g.- Gametes (sperm and egg) |
Homologous chromosomes |
Two chromosomes that are similar in shape and size. One from Mom and one from Dad. |
Tetrad |
Two homologous chromosomes together. Forms in prophase 1. |
Prophase 1 |
Phase in meiosis 1. Tetrads form. Crossing over occurs. |
Metaphase 1 |
Phase in meiosis 1. Tetrads line up in the middle of the cell. |
Anaphase 1 |
Phase in meiosis 1. Tetrads are broken and chromosomes are pulled apart to opposite sides. |
Telophase 1 |
Phase in meiosis 1. Cell splits into two cells. Each cell has half the number of chromosomes as the parent cell. |
Meiosis 2 |
Phases = prophase 2, metaphase 2, anaphase 2, telophase 2. |
Exactly the same as mitosis. |
