Genome

The complete set of genes or genetic material present in a cell or organism.

Epigenetics

The study of changes in organisms caused by modification of gene expression rather than alteration of the genetic code itself.

Telomere

A telomere is a region of repetitive nucleotide sequences at each end of a chromosome, which protects the end of the chromosome from deterioration or from fusion with neighbouring chromosomes.

Telomerase

the enzyme in a eukaryote that repairs the telomeres of the chromosomes so that they do not become progressively shorter during successive rounds of chromosome replication.

Telomerase, active in normal stem cells and most cancer cells, is normally absent from, or at very low levels in, most somatic cells.
