What does asexual reproduction mean? |
The process resulting in the production of genetically identical offspring from one parent. Only one organism needed, without sex. |
What does sexual reproduction mean? |
The process involving the fusion of two gametes to form a zygote and the production of offspring that are genetically different from each other. |
What are the 6 steps of mitosis? |
Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase & Cytokinesis |
Explain interphase. |
Occurs before mitosis, the chromosomes are copied so you have 2 sets |
Explain prophase. |
Chromosomes become visible, the nucleolus disappears, the mitotic spindle forms, and the nuclear envelope disappears. |
Explain metaphase. |
The chromosomes become arranged on the metaphase plate and are attached to the now fully formed spindle. The chromatids line up in the middle. |
Explain anaphase. |
Sister chromatids separate, and the now-daughter chromosomes move to opposite poles of the cell. Spindle fibres drag chromatids to different sides. |
Explain telophase. |
Chromosome sets assemble at opposite poles, a nuclear envelope reforms around each set, and cytokinesis (division of the cytoplasm) usually follows. Two new nuclei are formed. |
What does uncontrolled mitosis lead to? |
Cancer |
Why does mitosis take place? |
Growth, repair and reproduction (GRR) |
