What does asexual reproduction mean?

The process resulting in the production of genetically identical offspring from one parent. Only one organism needed, without sex.

What does sexual reproduction mean?

The process involving the fusion of two gametes to form a zygote and the production of offspring that are genetically different from each other.

What are the 6 steps of mitosis?

Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase & Cytokinesis

Explain interphase.

Occurs before mitosis, the chromosomes are copied so you have 2 sets

Explain prophase.

Chromosomes become visible, the nucleolus disappears, the mitotic spindle forms, and the nuclear envelope disappears.

Explain metaphase.

The chromosomes become arranged on the metaphase plate and are attached to the now fully formed spindle. The chromatids line up in the middle.

Explain anaphase.

Sister chromatids separate, and the now-daughter chromosomes move to opposite poles of the cell. Spindle fibres drag chromatids to different sides.

Explain telophase.

Chromosome sets assemble at opposite poles, a nuclear envelope reforms around each set, and cytokinesis (division of the cytoplasm) usually follows. Two new nuclei are formed.

What does uncontrolled mitosis lead to?

Cancer

Why does mitosis take place?

Growth, repair and reproduction (GRR)
