What does it mean to be "True-Breeding"?
The offspring is identical to the parents.
What are the 4 Principles of Mendel?
1. Inheritance of biological characteristics is determined by genes.
2. Some forms of a gene can be dominant and others can be recessive.
3. An adult has 2 copies of each gene, segregated when gametes form
4. Alleles for different genes segregate independently.
What is "Incomplete Dominance"?
Neither allele is dominant, and the heterozygous phenotype is a mix of both parents
What is "Codominance"?
Both alleles contribute to the phenotype of the offspring.
How does having "Multiple Alleles" affect an organism?
More than 2 possible alleles exist in a population.
What are "Polygenic Traits"?
Controlled by many genes.
Name the phases of Meiosis
Interphase 1, Prophase 1, Metaphase 1, Anaphase 1, Prophase 2, Metaphase 2, Anaphase 2, Telophase 2
Explain Meiosis
Before Meiosis 1, Chromosomes are replicated. The pairs form a tetrad, and they cross over. In Meiosis 2, each chromosome seperates and 4 Haploids are formed, each with 2 chromosomes.
Relationship between Meiosis and Genes
Meiosis separates the sets of genes in a gamete so that the offspring gets only one.
