What are the two types of cells?
Prokaryotic (do not have a nucleus)
eukaryotic (do have a nucleus)
Name one way in which a plant cell is similar to a prokaryotic cell but different from an animal cell.
they have a cell wall whereas animal cell does not
name one way in which a plant cell is similar to an animal cell but different from a prokaryotic cell.
animal and plant cell have a nuclues whereas prokaryotic does not
What does magnification mean?
describes the extent to which an image has been enlarged
What does resolution mean?
the ability to distinguish between two points.
what is the resolving power of light and electron microscope?
light = 2 micrometres
electron = 1nm
what is the differene between light and electron microscope?
electron microscope has a shorter wavelength and so they have a greater magnification and resolution.
What are the two types of electron microscope?
scanning = bounces bema sof of electrons of the surface of an object.
transmission = passes beams of electrons through object.
what is cell fractionation?
breaks up (homogenises) cells
whilst cell are being homogenised cells are kept in a solution that....
a) has the same water potential as the cell
b)has a constant pH
c) is cold
what is ultracentrifuagtion?
seperates the components of the cells that have been broken up. ( heavy cells form pellets)
