mitosis is...
division of the cell nucleus
cytokinesis is...
division of the cytoplasm
why must cells go through mitosis? (3 things)
1. to increase surface area
2. to have organism growth
3. to repair damaged cells.
DESCRIBE PHASES OF A CELLS LIFE (INTERPHASE,G1,S,G2, etc.)
1.interphase- chromosomes are copied and spread out in the nucleus; centrioles are copied.
G1 (Growth 1)--the period between the ending of mitosis and the beginning of the S phase.
S (Synthesis Phase)-- one of the most vital events in cell cycle. the DNA of the genes and chromosomes is duplicated to form CHROMATIDS joined by centromeres.
G2 (Grwoth 2)-- this is the period between the s and mitosis. cell increas & needs centrioles, spindl fibers.
DESCRIBE PROPHASE:
longest mitosis phase
1. copied chromosomes appear as chromatids attached at the centromere.
2.nuclear membrane disapears.
3. spindle apparatus begins to form.
DESCRIBE METAPHASE:
**KEYWORD middle
1. line up in the middle of the cell single file
2. chromosomes attach to the spindle fibers.
DESCRIBE ANAPHASE:
**KEYWORD apart
1.centromeres split and sister chromatids seperate with the help of the spindle fibers
TELOPHASE
1. chromosomes COMPLETELY SEPERATED
2. nuclear membrane begins to reform
3. chromosomes begin to disperse
CELLS ARE DESIGNED TO CARRY OUT TO FUNCTIONS....
1. MACROPHAGE- the special cell that floats thru the blood stream and protects the body from invaders; use phagocytosis to kill bacteria.
2. NEURON- (nerve cells) long, thin cells in the body that carry messages thru electrical impulses
plant mitosis vs. animal mitosis........
NO CENTRIOLES visible in plant cells. spindle fibers attch to the sturdy cell wall.
NO CLEAVAGE FURROW IN TELOPHASE forms in plants. instead, a new cell wall, called a CELL PLATE, forms b/w daughter cells.
