What's an organism?

An organism is a living entity made of cells that has the characteristics shared by all organisms

What are the characteristics shared by all living organisms?

Reproduction, homeostasis, growth and development, response to environment, energy processing, structurally complex, and they have evolutionary adaptations.

What's the hierarchy of structural complexity?

Atoms are organized by molecules, molecules make up organelles, organelles make up cells, cells organize tissues, tissues make organs, and organs made organ systems.

Definition of an organelle

sub cellular component with a specific function and structure

Definition of a molecule

more than two molecules held together by chemical bonds

Definition of an Atom

smallest unit of an element, not divisible to smaller part

What are the three tenants of cell theory?

cell is the smallest unit of life, all cells came from preexisting cells, and all organisms are made up of cells

What is homeostatis?

maintaining a constant internal temperature even when the external environment varies

What is evolutionary adaptations?

organisms becoming suited to their environment by acquiring adaptations through natural selection

How do you determine growth?

cell size, cell numbers, and growth is irreversible

What is photosynthesis?

converting solar light into chemical energy; carbon dioxide+water=sugars+oxygen

How do cells move during diffusion?

high to low concentration

What's the relationship between cells and organisms?

cells can be one part of an organism

Compare and Contrast Colonial, Unicellular, and Multi cellular

unicellular- one cell organism working independntly

Colonial- 2 or more cells working independantly living together

Multicellular- group of specialized cells working together forming an organism; rely on each other

What's a population?

a group of individuals of the same species living in an area

What are the parts of the endomembrane system?

nuclear membrane, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus(lysosomes, vacuoles, and plasma membrane)

Describe prokaryotic cells

-have organelles that are not membrane bound

-free floating organelles

-cells are small, approx 1-10um

-form unicellular or colonial organisms

-DNA is circular and located in nucleoid region of the cell

Describe eukaryotic cells

-membrane bound organelles

-generally larger cells 10-100um

-form unicellular, colonial, or multicellular organisms

-linear DNA contained in nucleus

-possess a cytoskeleton to change shape or carry out movement

Compare and Contrast prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms
