Pathogens are microorganism a that cause infectious diseases such as bacteria

Differences between bacteria and viruses?

Bacteria- single-called living organisms that are much smaller than animal or plant cells, many are harmless and some are used in cheese and medicine


Viruses- are even smaller than bacteria, usually have regular shaped, cause disease in every type of living organism from people to bacteria

How do pathogens cause disease?

Bacteria and viruses reproduce rapidly inside you. Bacteria can produce toxins which make you feel ill, viruses damage your cells as they reproduce

What are 3 ways in which white blood cells defend your body against microorganisms?

1. Take in the pathogens, destroying them so they don't make you ill


2. Produce special chemicals called antibodies, target particular bacteria or viruses and destroy them


3. Produce antitoxins, these cancel out the toxins produced by pathogens
