Cytoplasm

Apart from the nucleus, it is the contents of a cell. It is more than 90% water and contains salts, ions, enzymes, food molecules and organelles.

Chloroplast

A green organelle containing lots of chlorophyll. Found only in plant cells, it is responsible for photosynthesis. It is composed of many folded layers of membrane

Cytosol

The fluid component of cytoplasm

Endoplasmic reticulum

Involved in the production, processing, transport and storage of materials within the cell. Can be rough (associated with ribosomes) or smooth (without ribosomes).

Golgi apparatus

A stack of flat membrane sacs where the final synthesis and packaging of proteins into membrane bound vesicles occurs before they are secreted from the cell. It is linked to the endoplasmic reticulum.

Lysosomes

Membrane bound vesicles containing powerful enzymes that break down debris and foreign material.

Mitochondria

Composed of many folded layers of membrane. They are involved in the energy transformations that release energy for use by the cell.

Nucleus

A large organelle that is surrounded by a double layered nuclear membrane containing tiny pores that allow movement between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. The nuclues contains gebetic material and control cellular activities.

Plasma membrane

Composed of a phospholipid bilayer. It controls the movement of substances into and out of the cell and is responsible for the recognition, adhesion and chemical communication between cells.

Ribosomes

Tiny organelles located in the cytosol. They are sites of the production of proteins.

Vacuoles

Membrane bound liquid filled spaces that provide physical support (turgidity) and storage (large in plant cells). In animal cells vacuoles are involved in intracellular digestion or water.

Cell wall

Not an organelle. Only found in plant cells, it is a non-living cellulose structure outside the plasma membrane. It provides support, prevents expansion of the cell and allows water and dissolved substances to oass freely through it.
