Biological Psychology
The study of the physiological evolutionary, and developmental mechanisms of behavior and experience.
What are the four biological explanations of behavior?
Physiological ( relates a behavior to an activity of the brain)
Ontogentic (describes how behavior or a structure develops)
Evolutionary (Describes how a behavior or structure evolved)
Functional (describes WHY a structure or behavior evolved the way it did)
What is the Mind-Body problem?
The idea that either the mind and the body are one thing, or that they are two separate entities.
Monism vs. Dualism
Genes
Units of heredity that maintain their structural identity from one generation to another.
A portion of a chromosome
Chromosomes
Strands of genes, which also comes in pairs. Genes are a portion of a chromosome
DNA
deoxyribonucleic acid
Nucleotide based building blocks of life. Contains phosphate group, sugar, and bases
Enzymes
Biological catalyst that regulate chemical reactions in the body.
Sex-Linked Genes
The genes located on the sex chromosomes
Sex-Limited Genes
present in both sexes, generally on autosomal chromosomes, but active mainly in one sex.
Evolution
A change over generations in the frequencies of various genes in a population.
Fitness
number of copies of one's genes that endure in later generations.
Why do we use animal testing?
-We have similar underlying mechanisms
-Benefits animals
-Certain experiments you can't use humans
Behavior
an organisms response to the stimuli.
Neurons
Specialized cells of the nervous system, neuronal activity affects/produces behavior.
Codons
Sequence of 3 DNA bases which specifies amino acids
How is a protein synthesized
DNA-RNA-Amino Acid-Protein
***What happens when a gene is expressed****
A protein is synthesized.
Epigenome
Genome above the regular one. It tells what the genes to do.
