What is an amphipathic molecule?
Molecule that contains both hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups
What is the structure of a phosphoglyceride?
Hydrophilic head - choline/serine/ethanolamine, phosphate, glycerol

Hydrophobic tail - fatty acid
What happens when heat is applied to the lipid bilayer of a membrane?
Heat increases fluidity
What is the effect of unsaturation on the lipid bilayer?
Unsaturation increases fluidity
What is the effect of the presence of cholesterol in the lipid bilayer?
Cholesterol restricts fluidity near the surface of the bilayer and promotes fluidity at the centre
What creates membrane asymmetry?
Phosphatidylcholine on the outside, phosphatidylethanolamine on inside, gives curve to membrane
What are 4 functions of membrane proteins?
Transporters
Anchors
Receptors
Enzymes
What are integral proteins?
Integral proteins have one or more parts embedded in the bilayer
What are peripheral proteins?
Peripheral proteins are attached to the membrane via interactions with integral proteins or lipid head groups
